Colorado River Headwaters Scenic and Historic Byway
This 70 mile scenic Colorado mountain drive offers several opportunities for drivers to stop and partake in some of Colorado’s finest fishing, rafting or a chance to sit back on the bank of the Colorado River and soak up the sun. The route begins in Grand Lake, a quaint mountain town that sits on Colorado’s largest natural lake. Drivers will travel along the Colorado River down the Byway with stops at several Colorado historical sites and former Colorado mining towns. The road trip ends on a gravel road traveling through the spectacular Upper Gore Canyon. While this scenic drive can be completed in one day its worthwhile to tack on an extra day if your schedule allows so you can enjoy the beauty and history lesson this Colorado road trip has to share.
Driving Directions: Begin the road trip at the Grand Lake Visitors Center on US Hwy 34, which is located outside of Rocky Mountain National Park. Head towards Granby, when you get to this small mountain town, US Hwy 34 will end but the Byway continues by heading west on US Hwy 40. At Kremmling, take Grand County Road 1 to State Bridge, which is the end of the Byway. Grand County Road 1 from Kremmling to State Bridge is a gravel road.
