Summer Ranger Programs at
Rocky Mountain National Park’s
Kawuneeche Visitor Center

Grand Lake, Colorado- Visitors to Grand County, Colorado, and the Rocky Mountain National Park this summer should be prepared to be educated as well as amazed.  The Kawuneeche Visitor’s Center on Trail Ridge Road (Highway 34) near the town of Grand presents a series of free Saturday evening programs designed to help visitors get the most out of their visit to the Park.  These talks are presented by Park rangers or visiting experts and cover a variety of topics ranging from the history of the Park and surrounding communities to local flora and fauna.

The one-hour programs are held each Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Kawuneeche Visitor Center Auditorium.  The following programs have been set for June and July 2003, and other programs for July and August are in development:

  • June 28: “Snow Language” – a presentation on how animals and plants survive the Rocky Mountain winters by adapting to different kinds of snow.
  • On July 19, visitors will have a special treat:  Grand County’s own barbershop chorus, the Grand Chorale, will present a program of close-harmony fun.  Because of the popularity of this annual event, two showings, at 6:30 and 8:00 PM, have been scheduled.

Visitors can participate in other informal programs as well.  The Campfire Program begins nightly at 8:30 p.m. at the Timber Creek Campground Amphitheater with music, storytelling, stargazing, or discussions on a wide variety of natural history subjects.  Day visitors can also check at the Kawuneeche Visitor Center to see what films or guided walks-and-talks are scheduled for the day.

As the western gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Lake and Grand County make an ideal base for exploring the area.  In addition to easy access to the less-crowded side of the park, the area outside the park has much to offer as well:  boating, fishing, camping, trail rides, and more.
