The Communities of Grand County, Colorado: Grand Lake

Grand County, Colorado Tourism – Hang around the village of Grand Lake long enough and you’ll realize that this quiet little resort community nestled on the banks of majestic Grand Lake is the perfect place for families, couples and lone travelers to recharge their batteries, reconnect with loved ones and rejuvenate their spirits.

Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, uninhabited wilderness and alpine creeks that meander through fragrant meadows, Grand Lake has been a family tourism destination since the early 1880s, when the wealthy began building their summer homes along the shores of the lake. With the creation of Rocky Mountain National Park in 1915, Grand Lake became the gateway to 265,000 acres of raw, untrammeled wilderness. Today, the village is home to a lively community of artists, musicians and outdoor enthusiasts happy to help you reconnect with family, friends and loved ones.

While the outdoor adventures abound, the shopping, fine dining and cultural scene in Grand Lake is equally appealing. Stroll along the wooden boardwalks and browse the western-style storefronts for unique jewelry, 'cabin-inspired' home décor, the perfect pair of Wranglers or handcrafted children’s clothing and toys. Dine on the deck of one of several award-winning restaurants. Or relax in one of the area’s rustic cabins, plush B & Bs, historic lodges or rental homes.

For outdoor adventure, set sail across the lake with Spirit Mountain towering above. Hit miles of unguided snowmobile trails. Enjoy a moonlight ski and spaghetti dinner at the Grand Lake Touring Center. Or lace up your hiking boots and head off into the wild blue yonder.

Year-round, Grand Lake’s playbill and community events calendar is filled with one-of-a-kind performances and celebrations. During the summer, the Rocky Mountain Repertory Theater produces musical plays and dramas. The Con- cert in the Pines series, sponsored by the Grand Lake Arts Council, features Celtic, classical and folk music. A fine arts and crafts fair takes place in June, and the Rocky Mountain Field Seminars are hosted throughout the summer.

Each September, Grand Lake presents its Fall Festival where residents and visitors usher in the autumn with music in the park, crafts, and food vendors under the pines. The winter holidays come to life with a Christmas music festival, candlelight caroling and a live nativity play. In late January, Grand Lake hosts a Winter Carnival, with on-snow activities such as bed-sled racing, teapot curling, a Mardi Gras dance and a bartender’s cup.
