Going to the Dogs: Grand County Colorado 2003-4 Dogsled Competitions
Grand County, Colorado- Some of Grand County, Colorado’s most competitivewinter sports don’t take place on skis, snowboards, or snowmobiles…and the competitors compete wearing nothing but boots! Dogsledding is an increasing popular winter attraction, both for participants and spectators.
The Grand County towns of Kremmling and Granby will be the sites this year for two of Colorado’s top sled dog competitions. The Colorado Blue Ididarace and the Grand County Sled Dog Classic represent two legs of the “Mush the Rockies” series. Both events are open and free to spectators.
Dogsledding has a long history in Grand County. The Colorado Blue Ididarace, held annually in the beautiful Blue River area near Kremmling, has become one of the older and more respected dogsled events in the lower 48. Sprint teams of 3,4,6, and/ or 8 dogs from all over the country will compete for cash purses. Ski joring, where 1 or 2 dogs pull a skier, is a relatively new addition to the lineup. This season’s event will take place on Saturday and Sunday, February 7 and 8, 2004 from 9AM to 3PM. More information on the race is available from the Kremmling Chamber of Commerce (970-724-3472 or www.kremmlingchamber.com).
The Grand County Sled Dog Classic is a new addition to the series. Held this year on Saturday and Sunday, February 14-15, 2004, just outside of Granby, this is the final race in the “Mush the Rockies” series. 4-, 6-, and 8-dog teams, as well as 3-dog junior teams, will compete. Race information is available from the Granby Chamber of Commerce (www.granbychamber.com or 970-887-2311).
Once you’ve seen the dogs in action, it’s time to try it for yourself. A local outfitter, Dog Sled Rides of Winter Park, lets visitors have the “up-close-and-personal” view from a sled pulled by 8 to10 huskies. The two-hour tours take riders through our awesome snow-covered meadows and backcountry at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour.
