Grand County Colorado's Adventure Vocabulary

Grand County, COColorado’s Rocky Mountains are known for scenery that can leave you wordless.  As a public service, the Grand County Colorado Tourism Board is publishing the following list of words that you will need in order to fully appreciate the nature of the adventures offered in our neck of the woods all year ‘round:

Backcountry:  Miles and miles of it, all ready to explore on foot, ski, or snowmobile.  For the extreme backcountry experience, trek into the Indian Peaks Wilderness, where only the occasional jet contrail reminds you of civilization.

Navigate:  Hoist your canvas on Grand Lake, one of Colorado’s most scenic natural lakes.   If speed is more your thing, try a jet ski on Shadow Mountain Reservoir, Lake Granby, or Wolford Mountain Reservoir.

Climb:  Grand County is the southern gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, where you’ll find some of the best alpine climbing in the country.  Snow, ice, rock – pick your challenge!

Whitewater:  The upper reaches of the Colorado River are the perfect place to run the rapids.  Take your choice of several local commercial rafting guides, or strike out on your own by kayak or canoe.

Blast:  Hit the slope on skis or fat tires for some of the most awesome downhill runs you’ll find anywhere.  If you haven’t tried Snocat skiing, head for the high ground at Berthoud Pass and get ready to access the wild slopes.  And, each summer, Winter Park Resort’s nearly 3,000 acres of prime ski terrain translates into 500 miles of multiuse and single- and double-track trails for some of the best mountain biking around.

Wild: --as in wildlife. Moose, deer, and bighorn sheep are frequent visitors along Rocky Mountain National Park trails.  The Kremmling area, in the western end of the county, attracts many game animals including elk and antelope, making the region a popular hunting and wildlife photography destination.

Ride:  Saddle up for some real Western adventure!  Guided trail rides can let you explore the backcountry the way the original settlers did – on horseback.  Or, for an authentic Western adventure, sign up for a down-and-dirty cattle drive at one of our famous dude ranches.

Boring: Not in our dictionary!
